A tour-quality read.
For every junior.
Free green-reading books for junior golfers.
Golf should be a fair game.
A green book shows how each green slopes and breaks - the read the best players rely on. I think that read should belong to every junior who works for it, not just whoever pays for it. So I taught myself to make these books, and I give them away free.
The books so far
Seven Bay Area courses, built free - with more on the way.
How I make them
Each book is built only from public data. I wrote the software that reads it and computes every green's slope, contours, and break, then draws the hole layout and pulls the yardages from the scorecard. Seven Bay Area courses so far.
- OpenStreetMapHole & green geometry, under the ODbL.
- USGS 3DEP LiDARPublic-domain elevation - slope, contours & arrows computed here.
- Published scorecardPar, yardage & handicap.
The details matter.
I held the physical book to the same standard as the software. I tested paper after paper before settling on a lightweight matte cardstock - matte so it reads in bright sunlight, thin enough to fold into a scorecard holder, and kept to as few pages as possible. Then, rather than use an off-the-shelf binding, I designed my own in Autodesk Fusion 360 and 3D-printed it to fit the book exactly - light, strong, and clean. Every choice had a reason.
